When is tick season around Kamloops and Revelstoke?

In BC's Interior, the tick you're most likely to find is the Rocky Mountain wood tick. Around Kamloops, ticks start to appear in March, are most active in April and May, and drop off by July. Around Revelstoke, where snow lingers longer, they tend to show up once it melts. There is often a smaller second bump in the fall, and mild weather can bring them out earlier or later than usual.

Where do ticks live?

Wood ticks like open, grassy, shrubby and rocky ground: the dry hillsides around Kamloops, and the meadows, trail edges and brushy clearings around Revelstoke. They wait on the tips of grass and shrubs and climb onto a dog, cat or person brushing past.

How do I check my pet for ticks?

After walks in grass or brush, run your fingers slowly over your pet's whole body and feel for small bumps. Pay extra attention to:

  • the head, ears and neck
  • the armpits and groin
  • between the toes
  • under the collar

Check again later that day or the next. A tick that has been feeding grows larger and is easier to find.

How do I remove a tick?

Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool. Grip the tick as close to the skin as you can and pull straight out with slow, steady pressure. Don't twist, squeeze the body, or use heat, oil or nail polish. Wash the area afterwards and wash your hands.

Should I use tick prevention?

Many dogs that walk in grass and brush during tick season do well on a tick preventive. Products differ for dogs and cats, and some dog products are dangerous for cats, so ask your vet which prevention is right for your pet before you buy.

When should I call the vet?

Call your vet if you can't remove a whole tick, if the bite area gets red or swollen, or if your pet seems weak, wobbly or has trouble getting up. Rarely, wood ticks can cause tick paralysis, which needs a vet right away.
