Betta fish setup basics: tank, heater and care
By the Animal House team · Reviewed

What size tank does a betta need?
Bigger is better. A tank of at least 5 gallons (about 19 litres) gives a betta room to swim and keeps the water more stable than a small bowl. Choose a tank with a lid: bettas can jump.
Does a betta need a heater and a filter?
Yes. Bettas are tropical fish and do best in warm water, around 25 to 28°C (77 to 82°F). An adjustable heater and a thermometer keep the temperature steady. A gentle filter keeps the water clean without blowing your fish around.
How do I set up the tank?
- Rinse the gravel or sand and decorations in plain water, with no soap.
- Fill the tank and add a water conditioner to make tap water safe.
- Add the heater, filter and thermometer, and let the tank run for a few days.
- Bring your betta home and float the bag in the tank for about 15 minutes so the water temperatures match before you let your fish out.
What should go in the tank?
Bettas like plants and places to rest and hide. Use live plants or soft silk plants; hard plastic ones can tear their long fins. A cave or other hiding spot helps your betta feel safe.
Can a betta live with other fish?
Male bettas fight with each other, so keep only one male per tank. Some bettas can share a large tank with peaceful fish, but many do best on their own. Ask staff before adding tank mates.
What do bettas eat?
Feed a food made for bettas, a small amount once or twice a day. Don't overfeed: uneaten food fouls the water.
How often should I clean the tank?
Change about a quarter of the water each week, using conditioned water at the same temperature.
Can the store help?
Bring your questions in and staff can help you put a betta set-up together. See what we carry for birds and fish, and call to ask which fish are in stock.
