What does a new puppy need on day one?

  • The food they're already eating. Ask the breeder or shelter what they've been fed and keep it the same for the first days. If you want to change it, switch gradually.
  • Food and water bowls. Sturdy and easy to clean.
  • A collar or harness, a leash and an ID tag with your phone number.
  • A crate or a safe space for sleeping and quiet time.
  • A bed or blanket.
  • A few safe chew toys sized for a puppy's mouth.
  • Poop bags and an enzyme cleaner for accidents.
  • Small training treats.

  • Food and water bowls.
  • A litter box and litter. Put it somewhere quiet and easy to reach.
  • A scratching post to protect your furniture.
  • A carrier for the trip home and vet visits.
  • A bed and a couple of small, safe toys.

What can wait a week?

Grooming tools, extra toys, a bigger bed and any "nice to have" gear can wait until you know your pet's size, habits and favourite things.

How much food should I buy at first?

Start with a small bag. Young animals grow quickly and their needs change, so it's easier to adjust when you haven't bought too much. The feeding guide on the bag tells you roughly how much to give by age and weight.
