Does my dog need a coat?

Revelstoke winters bring deep snow for months, and Kamloops winters bring cold snaps and icy sidewalks. Some dogs handle the cold well. Others feel it quickly. Dogs that usually benefit from a coat or sweater in winter:

  • small and toy breeds
  • short-haired and thin-coated dogs, like greyhounds and chihuahuas
  • puppies and senior dogs
  • dogs with health conditions

If your dog shivers, lifts their paws or slows down on cold walks, they're telling you they're cold.

How should a dog coat fit?

A good coat covers your dog's back from the neck to the base of the tail and wraps around the chest. It should be snug without rubbing under the front legs, and your dog should be able to walk, sit and do their business comfortably. Bring your dog in to try a few on.

Does my dog need boots?

Boots protect paws from ice, snow balls between the toes and the salt and de-icers used on sidewalks. Most dogs walk oddly in boots at first. Put them on for short walks indoors before the first snowy day so your dog gets used to them.

How do I look after paws in winter?

  • Keep the fur between the toes trimmed so snow doesn't ball up.
  • Wipe paws after every walk to remove salt and de-icer.
  • Check for cracked pads or cuts, and ask us about products to soothe and protect them.

What about a toque?

A toque keeps ears warm on the coldest days, and makes for a great photo. Choose one that fits snugly without covering the eyes.
